Ben Tre attracts investment in new and renewable energy

07/10/2024

The People's Committee of Ben Tre province has collaborated with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to organize a scientific seminar on "New Energy and Renewable Energy - Potential and Investment Resources", aiming to provide further evidence and scientific basis for the development direction of the hydrogen energy ecosystem closely linked to ensuring national energy security in Ben Tre province...

The V1-3 Ben Tre Wind Power Plant is the province's first wind power project to be put into commercial operation, inaugurated on November 28, 2021.

The workshop took place on the afternoon of October 2, 2024, as part of the Ben Tre Province Investment Promotion Conference 2024, aiming to convey the message and direction of the province's development regarding new energy, renewable energy, and green hydrogen.

BEN TRE HAS MANY ADVANTAGES TO DEVELOP "GREEN" ENERGY

Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee Tran Ngoc Tam said that Ben Tre has a 65 km long coastline, with great potential to develop renewable energy and new energy projects to promote local socio-economic development.

Currently, the locality is focusing on developing and preparing infrastructure and resources to develop "green" and clean energy such as: wind energy, solar energy, biomass energy, gas energy and especially new green hydrogen energy.

According to the head of the provincial government of Ben Tre, the Resolution of the 11th Provincial Party Congress, term 2020-2025, has set the goal of striving to build Ben Tre province into a relatively developed province of the Mekong Delta region by 2025, and of the whole country by 2030. The general objective is to expand the development space towards the east with a focus on maritime economic sectors.

During the workshop, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Phan Thi Thang, provided information on Vietnam's renewable energy and hydrogen development strategy until 2030 and vision towards 2050. She emphasized the energy transition, with a gradual reduction in the proportion of fossil fuels used in electricity production in favor of new energy sources and renewable energy, which is the current global development trend.

The Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade also remarked that Ben Tre is a locality with the potential to develop diverse and abundant "green" energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy, energy from waste, green hydrogen, green ammonia...

“And according to the Power Plan VIII and the plan to implement the Power Plan VIII approved by the Prime Minister, Ben Tre province is planned to develop renewable energy sources,” Ms. Phan Thi Thang emphasized.

However, to achieve the goals according to the clean energy and renewable energy development plan of Vietnam in general and the plan of Ben Tre province in particular, the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade noted that in the coming time, it is necessary to consider and implement a number of solutions, such as: Creating a favorable and transparent investment environment; publicizing planning and investment project portfolio; removing all barriers to attract and encourage the private sector to participate in investing and developing new energy and renewable energy projects...

GREEN DEVELOPMENT: THE RIGHT CHOICE

In his directive at the seminar, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh welcomed Ben Tre province as well as other localities for their ongoing development of a "green" economy, aiming towards sustainable development.

The Deputy Prime Minister requested that ministries, sectors, scientists, investors, and localities put forth proposals and share fundamental core content regarding the direction of new energy and renewable energy development. He also urged for the identification of potentials and extensive investment opportunities in the field of "green" energy in Ben Tre province and nationwide to consolidate valuable and important experiences as a basis for practical application.

The Government leader also requested localities and experts to proactively propose appropriate policies to the Government and ministries to strongly develop the new energy and renewable energy sectors of their localities, as well as the whole country, in the future.

Within the framework of this green energy conference, a panel discussion on green hydrogen and green ammonia also took place, attracting the attention of investors, businesses, especially macro managers and state management agencies.

Chaired and coordinated by Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Quyen (known as Winnie Huynh), the CEO of The Green Solutions Corporation, the session on "Green Hydrogen: Technology, Finance, and Development Policies" with the theme "Green Hydrogen/Ammonia Transport and Storage Technology" discussed the most advanced technologies, development trends, and optimal solutions in the production, transport, and storage of green hydrogen and green ammonia. The session also covered financial solutions, support programs, and initial operational mechanisms in the green hydrogen industry.

Answering questions from delegates and speakers about issues related to green hydrogen and green ammonia that are of interest, the leader of The Green Solutions assessed that the hydrogen industry is a new industry; but is forecasted to play a very important role in the future, especially in the context of energy transition to renewable energy towards the goal of Net Zero by 2050, as committed by the Vietnamese Government at COP26.

According to Ms. Quyen, the ecosystem needed for hydrogen is not only about mechanisms, finance, and technology, but also involves many different activities.

Concluding the workshop, Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Canh affirmed that Ben Tre will resolutely and quickly deploy plans, programs and projects to concretize the implementation of the National Energy Master Plan and the National Power Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

“Ben Tre province will increase the introduction and promotion of its potential and advantages so that investors and businesses can learn about and grasp the province's new thinking, vision, and development space to the east,” the leader of the Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee pledged.
